I have looked through some of the other posts on this but I need an explanation for a newbie.....

Is it possible to enter a block of text and an image on the main index template so that it will be shown above the first new blog post (permanently)?

Do I just enter the HTML code in the template?

I only want this block of text on the main blog page, not on the categories or archive pages.

What code do I need to add to specify the index page (if that is what it is called)only and where in the main index template would I place this code?

Do I need to use an IF statement? How?

Finally, if this can be down, will Technorati and others still crawl and accept pings (as they do not if its a static front page)?

    Thanks
