I am very very new to all of this and I am trying to set up a blog for my wife and I must really be dense. She has a domain all set up and I am in the process of trying to design her site for her. I have set up a database with the server. I have set up the MySQL settings in my wp-config.php file and uploaded to here directory. I've checked and rechecked the settings and everything looks right. Now this is where I am probably dense, the instructions tell me to "open /wp-admin/install.php in your browser", does that mean that I just type that into the browser or is that at the end of herdomain.com?? I don't understand how typing that into the browser will get me to her files?? I am using 1and1.com as a server , have you had any problems or conflicts with them?? When I type the /wp-admin/install.php I get "No file exists at the address"/wp-admin/install.php" ". what am I doing wrong??
thanks
Tmark
You'll need to add the /wp-admin/install.php to the end of whatever you type to access her blog. for example. http://www.domain.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php WordPress is a subdirectory of your root web directory.
Thank you
I was under the impression by what files I was seeing in the folder that wordpress aided in the design aspect of the blog page . Is that true or do I need to design the blog page separately. And do I then name the wordpress folder what ever her blog is going to be named then link to that folder for the blog??
The look of any WP blog is defined by the theme in use. There thousands of free themes, you can pick one or make your own.
WP can be installed in any (sub)directory no matter what their name is.
I kind of wanted to see what the themes are that WP provides to "try" to mayke it a little easier but I am unable to see them using dreamweaver 4. If I attempt to design it my self do I just save the "blog" design to the WP folder and is there a specific folder to save it to? then how do I apply the blog code to the page??
I did try typing in http://www.herdomain.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php and I didn't get a login page I am just getting a generic page since her website is still under construction but I was hoping to get her blog at least started. I may just be trying to jump the gun.
Well, I guess you should get a bit more familiar with how the WP theme system works...
1. Don't use DW for editing the WP theme files - it will screw up everything.
2. There is a lot of info in the Codex:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development
http://codex.wordpress.org/Blog_Design_and_Layout
Re your last post: is WP installed in a subfolder named "wordpress" or is in the root? If the latter, omit the /wordpress/ part :)
WordPress is the only folder currently in the directory, so I wouldn't use /wordpress/ in the address, correct??
I guess my problem is that according to the install instructions I should at least get some sort of login page to put in a login and password, but I am not getting that. I thought that that was part of the "5-minute install" was the login?? should I get to that point even at the early stages that I am in??
I did just find the "codex" pages so I am starting to go through those
thank you
Well, with "herdomain" and without a link it is difficult to figure out what you messed up.
Yes, during the install it gives you the login info (admin+pw) and clicking the link should have taken you exactly to the login page.
If your have a directory called "wordpress" then it IS in a subfolder, so the paths suggested above should work.
Here it christyreisinger.com
I was just looking at the database on the server to make sure it is ready and it is, but am I suppose to put that in her directory or does it just stay where it is and I don't mess with it?
Rule of thumb: if you don't know what that "thing" is (like the database) never mess around with it!
And sorry, for giving you the theme develeopment links above.
You need to start with more basic things:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Getting_Started_with_WordPress
(what is it you are referring to all the time "her directory"???)
The directory on the server where her pages and anything extra is stored.1and1.com doesn't really call it the public_html folder but that is what it is essentially.
OK. Let's get back to the basics.
1. 1&1 is one of the worst hosts possible...
2. You just confused everybody here by starting to talk about "design" when your problem is to make a standard installation.
3. There are no files, there nothing at the domain you gave above.
4. Decide where you want our WP to be installed and follow the detailed instructions:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Detailed_Instructions
I would hazard a guess the files are now in http://blah.com/wordpress/wordpress
Well I have downloaded an all new version of WP and downloaded Fetch for my FTP program to take DW completely out of the picture and still nothing so now I have a question into the servers tech help to see what they can do. 1and1 claim that they can do WP, so we'll see.
Thanks for all of your help and being patient with the newbie
hopefully everything wil be better tomorrow.

It is still a mystery where do you upload the WP files...
Well I am back with know good news. All 1and1 sent me was a link to the install instructions for 1and1.com which is exactly the same as WP. I sent them a return email blasting them and telling them that I want help not FAQ's. I've been looking at WP's troubleshooting and I have checked everything with the wp-config and everything is right with that. I have gone as far as changing the password with in MySQL and changing it in the wp-config. changed the wordpress folder to christysblog, which is the description in the MySQL. I am starting to stress alittle. Next step is the "install4free". Any good feedback on this option would be appreciated.

Hi I am attempting my first blog and would like some help please. I have Fantastico but am unsure about the terminology used. I am not without inelligence only experience of this practice. This is the command step that I am unsure of the actual meaning of; Unzip the package in an empty directory
Open up wp-config-sample.php with a text editor like WordPad or similar and fill in your database connection details
Save the file as wp-config.php
OK, let me ask this question, does wordpress get uploaded into the MySQL database or does it get uploaded to the file on the server that I put my web page files??
Cockney,
Fantastico is on your server.
The instructions talk about what to do on your own computer!
Big scripts usually come in a compressed format (.zip) and you need a tool to decompress=unzip.
That's a not a WP-specific thing - it is a standard procedure when downloading software/script.
And start your own topic next time!
Tmark: you can NOT upload any file into the MySQL database, sorry.
You upload the WP files and directories in the root folder - if you wish: where you put any other "web file".
So that much I have right but it still doesn't want to work.
I've been also reading the codex files for login trouble and have tried a couple of the suggestions but still no deal.
I'll keep trying.
Now you made me curious... can't imagine why it doesn't work.
If you want contact me by clicking on my name here and I'll try to take a look at it.

I'm brand new and have never done this before and am completely stuck! I'm trying to download a theme for my blog page. At this point I don't even care which one it is, I just want SOMEthing other than the blue blog screen that pops up with WordPress blogs. However, each time I click to download theme I can see the zip file on my desktop but when I try to open it its most data (script)files, I guess. Nothing that just lets me open and apply it to my blogsite.
Anybody know how should I open this to make it work?
You unzip it and upload it to your themes folder... and you may have gotten a faster response by posting a NEW thread instead of posting your question in an 11 month old completely unrelated topic.

Poe, THANK YOU for your response..
Two questions: First, how do I start a new thread? I just clicked on the first link that popped up after I entered my question in the search box.
Next, how do I load the unzipped file to my "theme folder"? I don't believe I've seen a theme folder in anything that I've opened or edited. I saved the file to my desktop and when I open the unzipped file it contains 7 or 8 "components" of the compressed file but nothing that I can just open and apply to my blog page...sorry to be dense, I'm just soooo brand new to all this...
You would upload (using FTP or a browser or however you upload your files) the unzipped theme folder to wp-content/themes in your blog directory.
To start a new thread, click "new" on the main topic page at the top.

hi this is the error I GET, i have checked several time the username/password of the database:
Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
