First Day running WordPress, I broke it! PLEASE help (7 posts)

Here's the painful part. I am volunteering at a non-profit clinic to help them figure out how to update their website. I was given the ropes on this WordPress software that they use to run it. I was looking around and trying to figure stuff out, and on my first day, I crashed their website. Not sure how I did it yet.

I actually don't know which version was running because it crashed and I can't look. I was trying to activate a plug-in, or update one, and it crashed the website. When I login now, it brings me to a blank page instead of the dashboard. If you visit the site, it is down. They need this site to be working.

I need to talk to a WordPress employee on the phone. This clinic pays them for the website hosting, I believe. Not sure how all of that works yet. I believe they should be able to contact someone from this company. They cannot afford people who know what they are doing to run the website or do IT stuff, like use FTP to change files around or what not. They need support from Word Press.

Please give me some idea of how to begin to deal with this. I am mortified now. If you are an employee, please email me.

I'm not sure who pays what, but it's not anyone here. This support forum is staffed by unpaid volunteers who do this on their own time. There is no phone support here.

If you can describe what you've tried or what the problem is exactly then someone here will offer technical advice. A URL to your site may also help.

Also give this a read too, it explains the do's and dont's here.

If the clinic pays WordPress for hosting, that's WordPress.COM, and this is WordPress.ORG. They are not the same thing.

People here are really helpful about everything WordPress, but if it's .COM hosting the site, you'll need to talk to them.

Thank you for the clarification. My apologies for not understanding the difference. I will read your links above. Thank you.

  5. No apologies necessary! I hope you get your problem fixed soon.

On the other hand, if you were activating a plugin, you weren't using WordPress.com.

It sounds as if the clinic has WordPress (from WordPress.org) installed on a web hosting service -- and the hosting service (might be a local group, might be a national one like those listed at http://wordpress.org/hosting/) almost certainly has a way to reach *their* technical support. Find the name of the hosting service, and then finding their website may get you on the right track. They're the ones that can help you recover the FTP access that you need.

    All the best.

I crashed my website yesterday and resolved it by renaming the theme's name (via ftp), not sure if that helps you. Probably need to do something the manual way to "reset".
