How would I go about (in plain English) making my files writable?
Please do not direct me to Codex because I do not understand what they are talking about :/
I understand that it does have something to do with file permissions right?

Yes. Unfortunately the Codex explains the whole file permissions topic as simply as possible. You need to know how to FTP into your web site and how to use your FTP client to change permissions. If you can't manage that, then perhaps you need to consider employing some paid technical assistance.
Alternatively, see if your hosting provider offers any form of interface to help you do this.
