    Hi,
This is not the first time that I am asking the same question, but it is because I haven't received any proper response, just the same links from the wordpress.org regarding the file permissions.
I use 1and1 hosting and the file permissions which usually works perfectly with Bluehost are causing a lot of problems on 1and1. Therefore I changed the permissions to 777 which is not safe at all.. But without changing the permissions my timthumb was not functioning...
My question is, What is the safest possible permissions which i can assign to the files and directories which also allows my timthumb and other scripts to work properly.
    Thanks.

Permissions can vary somewhat, depending on how the host manages certain things, but 755 should do everything you need and still, at least, keep write privileges away from group and other. If 755 doesn't work, then you'll likely have to use 777.
