I recently installed WordPress on a new server. But WordPress can’t write to files that are 644, only when they are 666.

This is obviously a massive security issue. It’s a dedicated server so I have full access to the admin controls of the server and cPanel.

Does anyone know what settings need to be changed to allow WordPress to write to 644 files?

    Thanks.

  • What files need writing to?

Everything that is editable from the WP CMS

That’s just the theme files, yes?

    Mainly + Plug-in data etc.

Plugins won’t be touched by the update – although older or poorly-coded plugins may not function (or may even cause problems) post-upgrade. Can I ask what theme you modified?

This has nothing to do with a WordPress update. I’m asking about changing security setting in cPanel on my new dedicated server to give WordPress permission to overwrite files and folder with file permissions of 644 and 755 respectively.

Theme is completely my own although I have no idea why that’s relevant.

    Cheers

Just wanted to check that you weren’t modding the default theme whilst you were here. 🙂 WordPress should be able to over-write files with 644 and folders with 755. It certainly can on my sites but you might want to check whether there are any file/folder ownership issues if you are having problems.

When it comes down to editing themes files on the server, you’re going to have to use something other than 644 for the template files.

Oh okay, my bad. I thought we’d gotten wires crossed.

Usually it can write to 644 and 755, even template files don’t seem to have any issue on my other servers. Just seems to be this new one that’s causing the issue. Although I have no idea why. It’s nothing that WordPress itself has any control over, that I know for certain.

I think something needs to be changed on the servers security settings in cPanel. But I have no idea what that might be or where I might find it.

I was hoping if you were knowledgeable about server setups you might know where to look?

On my sites, the theme template files need to be at least 766. Ditto the wp-content folder so that the uploads folder can be created by WP. Unfortunately, I’m not enough of a server expert to determine which of the server’s config controls this (I rarely wander much beyond httpd.conf). My guess is that you mightn’t be able to make the necessary changes via cPanel but that you’ll have to dive into the config files themselves. Your best bet might to try asking on a dedicated forum for your server software.
