Jetpack by WordPress.com
[resolved] [closed] Featured Image of Post Not Showing Up When Publicized to Facebook (79 posts)

  1. If you can't support this, at least give us the ability to disable the Publicize Open Graph tags

    It's a workaround for now but give Yoast's article on the topic a read.

    http://yoast.com/jetpack-and-wordpress-seo/

    Adding that add_filter is not difficult and will disable the Open Graph in Jetpack.

    I use Yoast and it sounds like this is the workaround that I need.

    I have tried adding the add_filter( 'jetpack_enable_opengraph', '__return_false', 99 ); line into my Theme Functions (functions.php) but the Jetpack OpenGraph tags are still in the page source.

    Does this line need to be in a specific place?

    I found that...

    add_filter( 'jetpack_enable_open_graph', '__return_false', 99 );

    ...worked

    @jools73 - where did you put that line?

    I have just commented out the following section from jetpack.php and it seems to work, there are now no Jetpack OpenGraph tags in my page source:

    /*
    if ( in_array( 'publicize', Jetpack::get_active_modules() ) || in_array( 'sharedaddy', Jetpack::get_active_modules() ) )
            add_filter( 'jetpack_enable_opengraph', '__return_true', 0 );

    $active_plugins = get_option( 'active_plugins', array() );

    if ( in_array( 'facebook/facebook.php', $active_plugins ) )
            add_filter( 'jetpack_enable_opengraph', '__return_false', 99 );

    if ( apply_filters( 'jetpack_enable_opengraph', false ) )
            require_once dirname( __FILE__ ) . '/functions.opengraph.php';
    */

    I'm a bit confused... if you take out the OG tags, does that mean you can't post it to FB or??

    This line just disables the Jetpack Open Graph tags, the Yoast tags are still in the page source.

    Same problem. Not really upto scratch with all the coding etc for wordpress themes. It's always picking up either my gravatar image or an image that is posted within the article.

    Any help would be great. http://www.akradon.co.uk

    I have this issue as well. Am not using Yoast, only one set of og tags when I view source on the post. Have run the URL through FB linter and everything looks correct. I get an image in FB if I drop the URL into a post box directly on facebook, but the auto-post from Jetpack shows the default blue image. (http://bit.ly/126Hjf8)

    Same issue here!

    url: http://heartstonejourney.com

    I have the 'Publicize' module activated in JetPack and when you look at the page source there are no open graph tags begin generated.

    Solved it! There was a conflict with the 'Header and Footer' plugin. Once I deactivated it, the og tags started showing up.

    I have the same issue here and I am still looking for a solution that would not requiring changing anything in my theme preferably, any progress from the Jetpack / Publicize team on the matter ? Anything I could do to help analysing and solving this problem?

    url of the blogs involved: thekingdom.be
    facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/thekingdom.be

    I checked the Jetpack code and I don't have any of the plugins listed as conflicting with Publicize. I used to have the Facebook one but not anymore.

    Also, I don't display the featured image on the post view, could it be the reason this is not working ?

    Side question: if for the time being this gravatar has to show, how do I change it to something else than the generic G icon?

    Was having the problem where all my blog posts were showing up in Facebook with the Gravatar image instead of a picture from the post. I realized that I was using both the All-in-one-SEO-Pack plugin and Yoast-Wordpress-SEO. When I deactivated the All-in-one the post images ported over fine to Facebook in a test post, and it correctly used the featured picture when there was one.

    Besides the image issue, Bing Webmaster Tools clued me in to an error where pages and posts had multiple meta descriptions (from the redundant tools). Wondering if this negatively impacted my rank.....

    Here is the site and FB page. It's frustrating that WP/FB doesn't go back and pick up the new image, and I can't figure out how to re-share a post to FB. I have had to delete the old post in FB and manually copy and paste and insert the images, but at least I shouldn't have this problem going forward.

    very Simple solution.
    Just change the permalink structure to Default.
    You can get this from here:
    http://www.YOUR_SITE_NAME.com/wp-admin/options-permalink.php

    Cheers

    Up until March 18 the images posted to FB when I set it to publicize, but now it does not. I don't think I updated anything. How can I fix this?

    Honestly don't want to download another plugin just to handle this so I'll deal. Hope for an easy solution.

    cstambush and dreaddymck, Facebook changed how they display images, they now only use the images in the OpenGraph meta tags, including for Publicize. Jetpack should be finding images to use for the og meta tags, however.

    dreaddymck, for this post for example:

    http://waynemckenzie.com/ziontist-cant-come-out-vibze-re-remix/

    I see an image there. How did you include that image in your post? Simply by "Insert media" from your media library?

    Hi Richard.

    That image as well as the rest were included by using the "set featured image" option in the lower left of the add/edit post page.

    I've unsuccessfully tried the "Insert media" from library option before.

    I too used "set featured image" and that is what worked until March 18. Did Facebook make its changes after March 18?

    This is the way it shows up now (and before) when I scheduled post. https://www.facebook.com/CLStambush?ref=hl

    However, when I copy and paste the link into my personal FB page, the images show up.

    Running into the same issue. FB publicize is picking up a random image in my image library. I can't seem to pull the featured image (or any other images) as the fb thumbnail.

    Any help would be appreciated!!

    Hi all,

    Yes, Facebook changed things on March 18th. Facebook should pick one of the images from a post. dreaddymck, the next time you publish a post, let me know so that I can see it and I'll try to see what's up.

    Calvinkwon, can I have a link to your post as well as the post on Facebook?

    Richard,

    Thank you for your reply!

    My test post is here: http://dmzstory.org/blog/
    My facebook page is here: http://www.facebook.com/DMZStory

    Facebook is selecting gmail logo image that is uploaded in my image library, rather than the featured photo. Please let me know if you require additional information.

    Best,
    Calvin

    Hi Richard.

    A new post has been created.
    http://waynemckenzie.com/kelli-leigh-missing-you/

    Looking at the source. I noticed that the image link associated with og: waynemckenzie.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/418387_312997528759680_643360112_n.jpg

    does not exist and is somewhat shy the image naming convention: waynemckenzie.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/418387_312997528759680_643360112_n-300x200.jpg

    It's possible that Jetpack is defaulting to a truncated image name.

    Or.

    WordPress needs to generate that image somehow.

    Thoughts?

    Calvin: I tried to run your post the the FB debugger:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fdmzstory.org%2Fwebsite-instructions-en%2F

    This gave me an error.

    So, I tried to run your root domain through the bugger:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fdmzstory.org%2F

    Which gave me other errors that maybe you could fix. It grabbed the image from the first image that it could find on the page, as far as I can tell. If you include a default og:image in your theme, it'll use that at least instead of the Gmail logo.

    ******

    I did the same for your site:
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwaynemckenzie.com%2Fkelli-leigh-missing-you%2F

    and it notes that it can't download that image with the truncated file name.

    So, there's no reason for Jetpack or WordPress to be truncating that filename. Are you uploading the image with the -300x200 already included? Can you check in your media library for it? because it almost appears to me like some function in your site is causing this, but without being able to see your site's code, I can't be certain.

    "...Are you uploading the image with the -300x200 already included..." that would be a no sir.

    Ok, no wwe're getting somewhere. So something in your site is resizing the image, adding the suffix, then deleting the original image for some reason. Any plugins or anything that might be doing that? Or, maybe you could post the code in your theme's functions.php to http://pastebin.com and then post a link here, or better yet, start a new thread and include a link to this one. Thanks!
