Featured articles, Upcoming events

    Hi,

    I’m very new to WP so sorry for such a newbie questions:

    – I would like to have some “featured stories” at the top of my blog, hand-picked from already published posts. Like:
    http://www.laptopmag.com/

    – And a list of “upcomming events”, like:
    http://www.last.fm/events

    It does not have to look exactly the given examples but I’m not sure whether is this matter of Theme of Plugin? Do you have any recommendations? Or how do I add such features to my blog?
