• I would very much like to be able to just press tab and instantly jump to the next input/textarea on the page. For example, when editing the title of a page, i would like to be able to press tab and instantly focus on the content field. Currently, it works when there are two inputs close to eachother, it will automatically jump to the next input. That’s default browser behaviour though, so it doesn’t work with text areas (at least not WYSIWYG fields).

    Please add. 🙂

  • The priority for keyboard tabbing behaviour has to be focused on those users who cannot use a mouse for any navigation rather than those who simply prefer to use a keyboard part of the time.

Alright, good to know. Thanks for making it clear!

I do however not agree you should focus on the minority. I mean, if you didn’t have a mouse, would you even consider logging in to wordpress and changing/adding something? I just tried myself, and although the actual menu navigation worked fairly ok, when i actually got to a page i had to tab at least 50 times to get where i wanted. If 1000 people which don’t have a mouse would like to edit something, i bet not even 10 of them would try logging in and managing the system with the keyboard only. Actually, i bet not even 100 of of 1000 people would start their computer without a mouse.

With that said, think about the hours of time a wordpress developer could save in his life time by using tab instead of grabbing the mouse and clicking on the next field.

I have an idea, why don’t you make that an option in the settings?

Erm – yes. Thousands of people who do not use a mouse use WordPress every day.

From a PC? Without any sort of trackpad or touchscreen? I seriously doubt that.

But as i said, i would very much like an option for that and i bet many others would appreciate it too. Is this the best way to submit a feature request or is there another place for it?

Oh – you have lead a sheltered life! Never head of VR software, switches, screen reader software, head pointers/sticks to name but a few? All of these are used by people who CANNOT use a mouse and yet manage to surf and run web sites IF the CMS concerned doesn’t implement barriers. In fact, one of the members of http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/ has been running WordPress sites for about 8 years. Without a mouse.

Fair enough, there is a group of people who use and appreciate the current behaviour. A small group, but still a group. I never denied that. I’m not saying you should remove it though, i’m just saying it would be nice to have an option to tab to the next input field for the users that actually use it with a mouse or trackpad (the majority, that is).

That would not be an easy thing to implement – far from trivial …. and a lot of unnecessary bloat. — I actually couldn’t think of a way to implement such a thing without major, major work. The kind of effort that is better spent on improving WP and adding new features

It’s kind of like saying a wheelchair ramp should be moved, because you have to walk farther around it to get to work and feel inconvenienced.
