We already can template pages... why not posts?
Allowing individual posts to be able to have their own template.

Don't know if that will ever be a standard feature but for now http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-post-template/
Ah... a plugin by Simon Wheatley. Right now it says it is broken, but I hope to see more work done with it before I try it out. 16 said it was broken while 4 said it worked. Will at least test it out.
I am right now at the point where I am not really wanting to install a plugin... the whole resource use and my personal site, Blondish.net has almost 500 posts and pages total, and that was after I trimmed out 150 static pages the other day.
Oops--sorry for that recommendation. JHouse found a better solution with this plugin:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/single-post-template/
The post template feature would be great. I am, however, using Nathan Rice's plugin for that on sites I designed for clients. So, that's a good interim solution. But having the post template functions built into the WordPress core is definitely on my wish list.
And, a theme that supports custom post templates:
http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/hybrid
I design my own... but I am about to blog about it at WPAddict, and I will include that Hybrid supports it, as well as the alterate plugins available.
I am wondering if anyone submitted this to the Ideas...or if not... maybe it should be submitted?
blondishnet--looks like that was put in Ideas - http://wordpress.org/extend/ideas/topic.php?id=442#post-1877
The Custom Post Templates not-working-ness was fixed some weeks back now... but, ooops, I had some stray version numbers when I resubmitted it and the new version wasn't showing up on the plugin page.
Short version: try Custom Post Templates now, it should work now.
Will try it out Simon. Might exercise it on WPAddict to try it out.
Updated to 3.x?
