• Using WP 2.6.2 and version 1 of Advanced RSS. All went well until I configured some option on the feed though I’m not sure which option I changed. Now I am receiving this following PHP error:

Fatal error: Cannot use string offset as an array in /home/equality/public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/advanced-rss/jp-advancedrss.php on line 104

    Any insight would be appreciated!

  • Looking into it now…

Update your plugin and it will fix the error, however I couldn’t work out how it would have happened in the first place.

I’m not sure what instigated the situation, but I think I can describe how it happened.

I changed an option in the widget. I think I cleared the title checkbox, but I’m not certain. After saving, wordpress wouldn’t display pages. I was too sleepy to capture the error so I deleted the plugin directory and wp was restored to normal function.

A day or two later, I tried reinstalling the plugin and this error resulted. I was able to work around by going into the database and delete the widget. Hopefully your fix will prevent it from happening in the future.

I’m going to investigate how I made it happen to see if I can reproduce the root cause, but you may want to take a look at what happens when you clear the title checkbox. I’m not certain that’s what I did, but I think it’s the most likely candidate.

Thanks, I’ll play around with it again.

I’m guessing that the second part of your problem was due to the removal and reinstall so I’ll tighten up the configuration to ensure that any errors, however unlikely, are automatically fixed. Still haven’t been able to reproduce any errors though. :/ Feel free to email me via code at jixor /dot com.

Looks like something similar is happening again:

Fatal error: Cannot use string offset as an array in /home/equality/public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/advanced-rss/jp-advancedrss.php on line 113

I hadn’t changed anything and it had been running fine for the last week. I went to edit an article and was hit with this. Only way forward was to move the plugin directory out of the way.

Any chance that you could tell me what other plugins you have installed? I’m thinking that something must be clashing. Or better yet could you email me your plugin file, its possible that something else is corrupting the file.

    Thanks.

Ok, the problem is probably that WordPress is actually corrupting the plugin’s options. When I work out a way around WP I’ll update the plugin.

One question, are you using a language other than english?

    Thread Starter ac4lt

    (@ac4lt)

I’m a native English speaker. Or at least what passes for English in America. 🙂

Our site isn’t live yet and we’ve decided to use the Event Calendar plugin for WP rather than import events from Google Calendar with RSS so this is much less of an issue for us, but I’m happy to help debug things.

In our test site, we currently have:
    Akismet
    Audio player
    Automatic Timezone
    Blogroll Links
    Blubrry Powerpress
    cforms
    Event Calendar
    Flickr Photo Album
    Get Recent Comments
    pageMash
    Wordpress Automatic Upgrade
    WordPress Database Backup
    WP Geo

However, at the time the error happened it was almost certainly a different set as we’ve been trying different plugins to see what works best for us.

The plugin has had a serious overhall so feel free to test it again. That bug is more certainly fixed, or more averted now.

When trying to activate the plugin, I got this:

Fatal error: Access to undeclared static property: jp_advancedrss::$instance in /path/to/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/advanced-rss/php4.php on line 42

No other plugins activated, language finnish.

New Error on WP 2.8.4: Fatal error: Call to undefined function fetch_rss() in wp-content/plugins/advanced-rss/php5.php on line 527
