    Hi all,

What are the drawbacks if I use Fantastico installation for my WordPress setup?

I have always use manual installation via FTP and adding database...etc because I used to read on the Drupal forum, how Fantastico installation will cause problems later on for Drupal installations.

1)But for WordPress, will I also have problems with my WordPress later on if I use Fantastico to install it now?

    2) Suppose I dont use Fantastico to install, but I use Fantastico to update my WordPress site whenever a new update comes up...is that safe?

    Thanks for any answers.

    1) The one downside to Fantastico is that they are always a little (not much though) behind when releasing the next version of WordPress.

    2) Don't know if you can use Fantastico to upgrade a blog "not installed via Fantastico".

    Hey Bliss & Michael,

I agree that Fantastico is often a step behind, although this can also depend on your host and how well they keep up with Fantastico updates.

RE: #2 It's perfectly fine and quite easy to manually upgrade a Fantastico-installed blog. I have seen, though, where Fantastico loses track of the correct version and is unable to perform further upgrades.

My preference is to always install manually because it's quite easy, offers maximum flexibility, and also helps me learn.

That said, if you just need to get up and going quickly, Fantastico can be, well, fantastic-o. Just make sure you know what version it's going to install beforehand and upgrade if needed.

In order to fool fantastico in re version upgrades, you simply change the version number in the fantversion.php file.

I didnt know that, which means to say that your host could fool you regarding your Fantastico version?

If I installed via Fantastico on my current host but later I want to change hosts, will it be a simple matter to just download the database and plug it into the other host, set the wp-config file and my WordPress should work on the other host? Having second thoughts on this.

I imagine that would be possible, but why? It would only look 'wrong' in Fantastico inside of cPanel, but you'd know as soon as you installed it.

Yes, you'll be able to move with no big problems. There's a lot of info in the WP Codex on moving WordPress and I've done it several times with no major issues. Just make sure to read a bit and ask questions before you do it and you should be fine.
