• Hi there, My business web site was hosted on homestead for a while, and I decided that I want to use wordpress — because I love it (I use it for a personal blog).

So, I just transferred the dns to my domain host, and purchased a web hosting package. Then I successfully installed wordpress, through cpanel and fantastico (I tried to do it manually, but I have lame skills).

Now, when I visit my site, wordpress does not show up, and I’m wondering if it’s just that the change in hosting hasn’t shown up yet, or that there are more steps I must take. Maybe I transferred the dns (god I don’t know what I’m talking about) to the wrong place?

If it’s the case that I have to wait for the transfer to take effect, is there any way I can just get started building my blog right now? I am itching to get started!

    Thank you.

  • It can take upto 78 hours for DNS changes to propagate through the internet, it all depends on your host and your geo-location too so am told.

As for starting, when you referenced your domain with your new host they should have given you a temporary web address. It would start with http://ip-address/~domain-name.com or something similar, you can access your site with it.

You should have ftp access, use it to check that the wordpress files are there in the public_html or www folder.

I too have a site hosted by homestead (currently) that I desperately want/need to change over to wordpress.

I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent trying to figure out how to do this. I probably spent 2 hours alone trying to get my ‘plugins’ or ‘permalink’ to show up on my wordpress.com account, to finally learn that I need wordpress.org to install a plugin. I thought I had a pretty good understanding of how websites worked until I started to dabble with wordpress.

Can you in any way spell out what I need to do to transfer this existing site to wordpress.org for a super-newbie?

On the previous post I see: “So, I just transferred the dns to my domain host, and purchased a web hosting package. Then I successfully installed wordpress, through cpanel and fantastico (I tried to do it manually, but I have lame skills).” but I do not understand what that means.

I have a web hosting package already but I can’t figure out the wordpress portion of it.

Any thoughts/help would be greatly, greatly, greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.
