• Hi,

I’m getting this error:

Warning: require(/home/content/49/5842849/html/wp-includes/load.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/49/5842849/html/wp-settings.php on line 21

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/home/content/49/5842849/html/wp-includes/load.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/local/php5/lib/php’) in /home/content/49/5842849/html/wp-settings.php on line 21

I believe the problem, and solution, is addressed in this thread <http://wordpress.org/support/topic/failed-to-open-stream-wp-settingsphp-on-line-21?replies=10> BUT before I delete anything (and thus make a huge mess which isn’t out of the ordinary for me) can someone clarify in terms simple enough for a 5-year-old what these steps entail?

Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress 3.1.

Thanks in advance!

The solution is more or less the same. But NOT from WordPress 3.1, but from WordPress 3.5.1 which apparently you are running now.

Backup your site first so that you can always restore if anything goes wrong.

Hi Krishna,
Thanks for the quick response!

I’ve backed up my site but I want to clarify the steps that this <<Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress 3.1.>>entails.
Do I delete the “wp-content” folder and then reinstall WordPress 3.5.1?
Thanks again!

No. It means that you will not change anything in wp-content because it is the folder where your plugins, themes, uploads, etc. are residing. In other words, you delete the other WordPress folders (wp-admin and wp-includes) and replace them with freshly downloaded copies.

Hi Krishna,
Thanks, again. I deleted wp-admin and wp-includes and replaced them with newly updated folders. I used the directions for updating WordPress manually but I couldn’t find the .maintenance file mentioned in step 1.5
Also, I’m still receiving this message:

Warning: require(/home/content/49/5842849/html/wordpress/wp-includes/load.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/49/5842849/html/wordpress/wp-settings.php on line 21

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/home/content/49/5842849/html/wordpress/wp-includes/load.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/local/php5/lib/php’) in /home/content/49/5842849/html/wordpress/wp-settings.php on line 21

Your site URL? Can you login to your admin panel?

BTW, I suggest to look for the file .maintenance again and if you can find delete it.

Do remember to check that your FTP software of configured to show all files. Some FTP software hides files that are preceded by . by default.

Krishna – letterandline.org – I can login to my admin panel and everything looks fine on the dashboard. I get the fatal error notification when I select “Visit Site.”

Esmi – i’ve been accessing the FTP through GD’s control panel. I can see the <.htaccess> file in the root folder but I’m not seeing the <.maintenance> file.

Is it possible that there’s a file/folder permissions issue?

Unless your site is showing a maintenance message, you will not have a .maintenance file. Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. You are definitely missing core files. Again, make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.
