• Hello,

I am interested in using wordpress for a new website and I am looking for some solid advice on ‘multiple word press installation’ on one domain.

    My questions are :

Suppose I want 3 WordPress installations, one each for England, Scotland and Wales on one domain. The main installation would be in the root directory for England which would be http://www.mysite.co.uk.
Then 2 more wordpress installations for Wales and Scotland.

** I am happy for the member logins to be individual on each installation and NOT shared between the three.

How should I install the other two wordpress installations ? as sub-directories OR sub-domains, and are there any major reasons why one is better than the other ?? eg :
    http://www.mysite.co.uk/wales <<<<< OR AS >>>>>> http://wales.mysite.co.uk

Also is there anything I will need to adjust on the .htaccess files of all three or the robots files to ensure all three installations are indexed and operate correctly ??

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thankyou

  • Are you planning on using the multisite feature?

It shares logins, for one. You can pick either subfolders or subdomains. Neither is “better” than the other. the only differences are with search engines. either way, they will still get crawled.

remember in multisite the other sites are *virtual* so once you turn on the network, “installing” the other two means you fill out 3 fields and click a button.

    Hi Andrea, thanks for replying.
My main issue is effective bot crawling and indexing between the multiple installations.

Multisite feature is not a problem for me, wasn’t planning on it and I don’t really require it as I am happy to have dedicated individual and non shared registration per sub domain or sub directory or per country.
All I am interested in is what is best for my way of making this work and have the bots index correctly on all three WP installations as normal (ie: not seeing a main site that will take the brunt of searches for the other two, ideally I need the sub domains or sub directories indexed correcly and found in the engines on their own content merit).

    Then you want subdomains.

    Ok, thanks Andrea, much appreciated.

Just out of curiosity, if I did ever use sub directories would they be index ok on their own merit as normal ?

They’d be index’d as a part of your main site.
