Extra tags appearing

Getting extra </p> tags in the markup right after the [divup] shortcode if the following paragraph starts on its own line. I can avoid it by putting the paragraph text immediately after the shortcode like this:
[divup]The paragraph starts here
but I can’t expect my client to always remember to do that. Any way to fix?
