compl33tWell, more of a hack than a solution.
If you've wanted to "extract" comments from wordpress to use with AJAX, you'll know how frustrating it is to get it to work (and look) like you want it to.
I've modified "comments.php" and "wp-comments-post.php" so they'll work on their own, and I'm currently using these modified files on my own site.

The files are stripped of formatting, and have only been tested with WordPress 2.x
