[resolved] External Links in the Navigation Bar? (6 posts)

I find it hard to understand why a software as sophisticated as WordPress has no way to customize the navigation bar with buttons containing external links. I cannot find a plugin that does this either. I want to have Home, About, and Contact (with a mailto link) and other buttons that open external sites in a new window. It appears that this cannot be done??

When I went to the Wigets page and saw the two sidebar areas you can add widgets to, I expected to see the navigation bar their also, but it is not.

Seems like a simple customization to me. Can it be done?

Gee, thanks Shane! I just did not know what term to search plugins with. I was using navigation and navbar instead of page or page-link.

I have installed the page-links-to plugin, and it works perfectly!

    Thanks again!

I have a simple solution to hard-linking your navigation that doesn't require a plugin.

It uses custom fields. You just add a little snippet to the very top of header.php template file. Create a page with the link title that you want, and add a custom field to it with key 'redirect' and value 'url to hardlink to'

    Hi there,

I am interested in using "natenewz"'s suggested solution of using a redirect (rather than installing another plugin) to use hardlinks in the navigation.

However, the website http://www.natenewz.com/2009/10/07/hardlink-wordpress-navigation/ is not loading for me. Can anyone offer advice? Or does anyone know what the code snippet is that I am supposed to add to header.php?

This sounds like the most elegant solution.

    Thanks
