External database? (5 posts)

    Hello,

I just started using WordPress at work and my boss wants me to make an external MySQL database, so that I will be able to get data from this database in the WordPress blog. My question is: is it even possible to do it? If so, how can I do it?

    Thanks in advance :)

What data do you need to pull from the external database?

You can set up another database connection, so that's not a big deal. You just need to look at the PHP mysqli functions for that. I'm a bit more concerned that your boss expects you to grab pages and content from that external DB, and that could bet a bit more complex.

The data has to be stored as a document (.doc, .docx or pdf).

Then the users have to be able to see those files through the website.

You can already do that by uploading media attachments in WordPress. There's no need for an external database, and that's not what databases are for.

  5. Actually ... that's how SharePoint stores a lot of data (yeah, I know) so the confusion is understandable depending on which way you come by it :) But in WP, we don't version the .dox/pdfs, so you can just upload them as media.
