Extending the colour in my sidebar

First: your theme is not designed like that – with a sidebar all along the whole site.
Secondly: even if it was, the bg colour of the sidebar will always be only as long as the content of the sidebar. To have it as long as the sidebar div is, google for “faux columns”.

Note. That still won’t solve the design issue.
