Exporting blog from 2.0 and importing to 2.8

I’m trying to help a friend move and update his self-hosted blog. It’s presently with Yahoo, and despite being set up to (apparently) automatically update the WP software, it never has, so he’s running 2.0.2 which was before any export capability was introduced.

Does anyone know a way I can get the blog into an xml file? Or some other way of porting the content across short of copying and pasting every post? I’ve tried Aaron Brazell’s WordPress-to-Wordpress import, but it’s for 2.1+ and doesn’t recognise the content as a valid format.
