I have a design blog hosted on wordpress and have now bought my own domain name to export this to. I am a little worried on what the correct steps are specially as i would like to change the overal design of the blog/website without loosing my posts. Also if i export will all my information still remain on the wordpress host ? Thank you, hope this makes a little sense, I know little about this but am keen to get started in a correct manner.

Exporting your data from your current WordPress installation will not affect it at all. Here's a link to a guide about migrating from WordPress.com to a self hosted WP site:

Don't worry, I've backuped & restored several times. You just need go to tools and choose export, in the new blog do the same things with import database. Everything will be worked well. :)
