Excerpts instead of Full Posts (4 posts)

    Hi, I'm very new at this but I'm almost ready to publish. This one thing keeps getting me stuck, however. On the blog page I'd like to just show excerpts and not the full post, with a link to continue reading. I was assuming I edit this on the blog.php page in the editor (am I correct?), and elsewhere on the forums I've seen that I should replace

    the_content()
    to
    the_excerpt()

    only I can't find the_content() on blog.php. Am I looking in the wrong place?

    I've spent several hours on the forums and playing trial and error to no avail. On content-standard.php I saw the_content() but when I changed it to the_excerpt() all my posts just became excerpts ONLY, as you might imagine.

    I've also checked the box to display the summary (instead of full text) under Settings -> Reading through the WordPress dashboard, but got nothing.

    On a related note, once I get this issue resolved is there an easy way to add a thumbnail image from the post to the excerpt? Or should I just get a plug-in?

    Thanks for any help with this matter.

    only I can't find the_content() on blog.php.

    Also try looking in other templates of your theme.

    Still can't find it. But as I read more about this it seems that changing the php files is not a great idea, as changes would get lost during an update. Whoops. I really don't know how to write code for a child theme or custom css... anyone have any tips or code I could copy and paste into a style sheet to get what I want - the blog page showing excerpts instead of full posts?

    Thanks so much!

    If you are not working with a Child theme, create it.
