Excerpt vs Content vs Loops (8 posts)

    I'm using the Sight theme (might not be active because I'm having problems with it) and can't figure out how to get it to show full posts instead of excerpts. I've looked over several pages:
    http://mashable.com/2010/06/10/wordpress-tweaks/
    http://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop
    http://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop_in_Action
    But I still can't figure out how to fix this.

    The only loop.php file I have access to is the one from the original theme download since it's not accessible through the dashboard. It's a long story, but I don't have access to full hosting side or FTP.
    Even in the original loop.php from the theme, I can't find any instance of it using <?php the_excerpt(); ?> instead of the_content().

    help?

    You can try this, it might work. Open loop.php and change line 23 from this:

    <div class="post-content"><?php if (function_exists('smart_excerpt')) smart_excerpt(get_the_excerpt(), 55); ?></div>

    to this..

    <div class="post-content"><?php the_content(); ?></div>

    You may also want to take the time to comment out the smart excerpts function in the functions.php file as well. Probably not necessary, but you can if you like.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    I tried to comment out the smart excerpts, but ended up messing something up. Now the whole shebang is down...and I have no idea how to fix it. Help...

    The edit I suggested worked well on my test copy. If something went wrong, I recommend you just re-upload the original theme files to restore the site and start over.

    Commenting out the smart excerpts in functions.php may not actually be required, but if you do, this is what it should like like when you are done.

    /*function smart_excerpt($string, $limit) {
        $words = explode(" ",$string);
        if ( count($words) >= $limit) $dots = '...';
        echo implode(" ",array_splice($words,0,$limit)).$dots;
    }*/

    Yeah, I actually didn't comment them out, but put in % without thinking (I'm used to using MATLAB, which uses % to comment).
    How do I re-load the original theme files? I can't get anything to work on the website at all so I can't go to dashboard, I can't go to the theme, etc.

    Probably the only way now, is with file access. Either an ftp client or through the file manager in the hosts control panel.

    Hi,

    I have the opposite problem with the Sight theme.

    When I fill the custom excerpt box on a post, the excerpt is displayed on my website but it doesn't display a 'Read more' or anything similar.

    What to do?

    @henrikjan2: As per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topics. This topic is 8 months old!

    However, as you are using a non-WPORG theme, you need to seek support from the theme's developers - paid or otherwise. We only support themes downloaded from wordpress.org here.
