When I enter links into the "Event Link (Optional)" field, they work in the blog page, but they only show up as "#" when the calendar is in the sidebar widget. Any ideas on how to fix?

If you're using the miniature calendar in the sidebar then this doesn't support links as more than one event can be underneath a given mouse over. If you want links you'll either need to use a list of upcoming events in the sidebar or you can use the full page calendar
