Etiquette wrt editing themes (3 posts)

Is it okay to download a theme and play with it - adding/removing stuff, changing colours, etc, but keeping the same basic idea there? Or is this going to get me in trouble?

If I can do the above, what about the credit? Many themes have a footer saying "theme by..." - I figured I should change that to something like "theme based on..." or "theme modified from..." - would that be okay?

Unless the theme explicitly says otherwise (I'd be surprised if any do that you can download freely) you can do anything you want to it. Anything at all.

Leaving a credit to the orginal author is always nice though and what you suggest, while entirely voluntary, is a decent thing :)

Selling a theme based on someone else's work is a different question with a different answer

No intention of selling anything, so your answer is exactly what I was hoping to hear - thanks :-)
