• Hi,

Yesterday wordpress was upgraded on my site, but some kind of a problem occured. I received an e-mail saying that:

“The problem was directory /home/artsevestre/skyemarineconcern.org/wordpress doesn’t exist! Unable to upgrade!”

When I tried to access the site, the only thing I could access was a page where I had to enter the site name, a username and a password. I did that, and then got a message congratulating me with my new wordpress site!

When I now access the page, I get a new empty site layout. All the content seems to be gone.

However, when I access it with an ftp-client, it looks as if the content is still on the server. How can I get the content back on the page?

    Thanks,
    Arthur

  • How exactly did you try to upgrade? WordPress does not send out such emails.

    Thanks Esmi,

As far as I know I didn’t try to upgrade. I did notice a bar on top of the site a few days ago recommending upgrading, and I clicked on it but noticed that I should backup before doing that. I didn’t have time for backing up at that time, so didn’t choose to upgrade.

Did you use your hosts/ 1-click installer to install WP in the first place? Is it possible that they tried to run an auto-update of their own?

I guess that’s what seems the most logical.. What I found really strange is that the page I got where I had to enter the site name, a username and password could have been accessed by anyone (I tried two computers at home without being logged in), with the result being a brand new clean site.. It doesn’t make sense to me.

Be that as it may, assuming that hopefully everything is safe, my big question now is how to get the content which obviously still is somewhere out there (accessible by ftp) back online. I’m in the middle of a campaign for which I need the site..

You might want to have a word with your hosts about this. It all sounds rather suspicious to me.

Ok, will do that. Thanks a lot, Esmi!

It was quite simple really. Mike at Dreamhost thought it was a bit of a glitch which somehow made a whole new directory (darn.. not even sure if that was the right word) when wordpress upgraded, which then hid the content. Well, I hope I got that right, but it’s all up and running again.

    Thanks once more.

It’s possible you moved your site at some point, or had a WordPress In It’s Own Directory.

I’ll follow up with engineering and see if it’s something we can reproduce and thus defeat!

Thanks for that. I’ll ask her about that email. Not come across it before.

Ipstenu-DH: speak of the devil! Just about to ping you. Do you know anything about this email mentioned in the first post?

I haven’t moved the site. Whether or n ot I had a WordPress in it’s own directory I don’t know. I’m not that savvy with computers and just installed it the simple way with the one-click option.
