• Hey there,
I have been trying to update my wordpress to 3.3.1. for days now and it is not updating – it gets an error which reads :
Maximum execution time of 10 seconds exceeded in /home/a1580173/public_html/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 172

The site is located at http://tryoutthis.site90.com

I am also trying to use the wordpress store plugin, but it wasn’t downloading either, so I thought, “i should get the update and maybe it will download” – but now it is like – halfway updated.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins.

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme.

    – backing up your database

    – finally running the upgrade

I have not tried that. Will that erase the changes I have made to it? Also, I thought I was already using the Twenty Eleven Theme.
Is there a chance that my deactivating the pluggins will have a negative effect on the website?

Thank you so much for your quick reply, Esmi. 🙂 You rock.

Will that erase the changes I have made to it?

Changes to what? Your current theme? No – unless of course you’ve been changing the Twenty Eleven theme itself – which you should never, ever, do. It is the default WordPress theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues. You should create a child theme for your changes.

Is there a chance that my deactivating the pluggins will have a negative effect on the website?

No – you can re-activate them (carefully) after the upgrade is complete.

Okay. Tried that. Still got the error. 🙁

Darn! 🙁 Looks like your server is configured in such a way that it’s stopping the upgrade. A timeout of only 10 seconds is rather draconic. 30 seconds is far more reasonable (and common). Have you spoken to your hosts about this at all?

    No. I suppose I should.
Would trying to apply the update via FTP better my odds of making it stick?

Yes – it should sidestep the timeout issue completely which (I suspect) is being triggered whilst the site is trying to collect the updated files from wordpress.org. And it’s not as difficult as it sounds. See Upgrading_WordPress.
