[resolved] [closed] Error when trying to logout (76 posts)

    I get this error when trying to logout of WordPress 3.0.1 & 3.0.2:

    "This webpage is not available. The webpage at http://my.site.com/wp-login.php?action=logout&_wpnonce=12c23f0af8 might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address."

    and

    "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error."

    in Google Chrome and

    "The connection was reset"

    in Firefox. Both browsers running on Windows XP SP3. I tested this on another computer running Windows XP SP3 (different ISP) and got the same error in Firefox.

    Strangely, I do not get these errors at all on my Mac, in both Chrome and Firefox; they both logout correctly. It also works correctly on my iPhone.

    I've tried cleaning cache and cookies in both browsers, reseting my sub-domain in my host's control panel, changing to the default theme; none of which worked at all.

    Anyone have an ideas? I've seen other posts regarding similar issues but with no resolution.

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    I tried all the things you mentioned and they all didn't work. After I reset the plugins folder by FTP, logging out worked correctly one or two times and has not worked since. Logging out still works correctly every time on my Mac in both Chrome and Firefox though.

    Try contacting your hosts in case it's a server issue.

    Why would it be a server problem when it works perfectly every time on a mac, and yet produces an error every time on multiple PCs?

    So i guess this is just an unresolved issue? Is their a place I can place a bug report?

    Interesting. I have seen many posts regarding this but no response from the developers. Seems like a confirmed bug to me.

    Recently installed a WordPress site and having the same logout problem as interconnect describes.

    My installation...
    Host Provider: IPOWER
    Wordpress 3.0.2
    Theme: Flexx Professional
    Plugins: Akismet, Easy Gravatars, Gravity Forms, s2Member, Sidebar Login, WP Super Cache

    My testing...
    -Works on all Mac machines (Safari, Firefox and Chrome)
    -Works on all Windows machines (Chrome)
    -Fails on all Windows machines (XP,Vista,7) with IE and Firefox
    -Still fails on clean install of FireFox with no add-ons

    Based on this post, it does not appear to be a plugin issue. Has anyone come up with a work-a-round solution for this problem?

    I use IPOWER as well, although other reports of this issue had people with all different hosting providers, so I'm not sure if the host has anything to do with it. Seems unlikely, given that it DOES work on certain OS's. My testing is the same as yours, although I could not logout successfully using Chrome in Windows XP.

    After further research and testing, I was able to get Firefox working.
    For some reason on my Windows Vista test machine, Mozilla Firefox was not enabled under the Windows Firewall Exceptions tab. After adding Mozilla Firefox, I was able to consistently log out of WordPress with no "The connection reset..." errors.

    Still having intermittent logout problems with IE8.

    Celebrated too soon. Firefox worked for about 4 or 5 login/logout iterations...then stopped working again. Even turned Windows Firewall off and still get the error.

    As a workaround to the issue, I ended up changing the wp-login.php file as follows:

    $action = isset($_REQUEST['action']) ? $_REQUEST['action'] : 'login';

    // logout issue work-a-round start
    if ($action == "logout") {
    	check_admin_referer('log-out');
    	wp_logout();

    	$redirect_to = !empty( $_REQUEST['redirect_to'] ) ?
                           $_REQUEST['redirect_to'] :
                           'wp-login.php?loggedout=true';

    	wp_safe_redirect( $redirect_to );
    	exit();
    }
    // logout issue work-a-round end

    $errors = new WP_Error();

    WordPress logout now works in all browsers on the PC and Mac.

    The above work-a-round stopped working after a few hours. Guess I will leave the fix up to the experts. The fact that I have never seen the issue occur on a Mac regardless of browser convinces me that the problem is Microsoft Windows related.

    As information, I have also tested with a Ubuntu VM and Firefox and was able to log in/out without any issues.

    Agreed. It would be really nice to hear something from a developer on this.

    Count me in. Same problems. Host is Fatcow. What is peculiar is the support there view a different querystring hiding under the log out-button.

    When I view it on my machine the log out link ends:
    .../wp-login.php?action=logout&_wpnonce=2f823aa8fd

    and I get the error trying to log out. When they (fatcow support) view the dashboard from their side, the same page on the WP dashboard has generated the alternate version of the button link: .../wp-login.php?loggedout=true

    weeeeird!

    Interesting, my host is also Fatcow

    I should add I never saw this error before, all things being equal; same blogs, db:s, browsers, my OS - only difference is I've moved my blogs to a new host and suddenly this error occurs, so either it's server related or something goes awry when you move wordpress files between hosts. But this is the only error I get so far - beyond the logout-error the blogs run fine, they display all content ok, and the admin panel works for common tasks - except the darn logout!

    Anyone experimented with tweaking permissions for the WP folders/files? Could this have anything to do with it?

    Someone savvy on the subject of the COOKIES used by WP during an admin session. The error discussed here occurs in Firefox, Chrome, and IE on, it seems, Win-platforms only.

    I now realize I only have to shut Firefox down to end my session in the admin panel, ie. I don't need to manually empty the complete cookie cache.

    So for me the sequence is,

    1 Start firefox, login to WP Admin panel - no problem
    >>> several cookies created by WP in the cookie cache

    2 I try to logout - the reset error occurs, and if I browse to my blog I can tell I'm still logged in because the 'edit'-function on each post is active

    3 I shut down firefox

    4 I restart firefox, and check cookie cache:
    >>> all cookies from WP are cleared except one

    And browsing to my blogs I'm now logged out from the admin panel.

    Same issue here...happens in Firefox, IE8, IE9, Chrome, Safari and Opera. Word Press 3.0.3. FatCow is my host.

    How many other people are hosted by FatCow? Maybe this is where the problem lies :-/

    Click Re Install Automatically from the "updates" link in Dashboard section.

    You have the latest version of WordPress.

    You have the latest version of WordPress. You do not need to update. However, if you want to re-install version 3.0.3, you can do so automatically or download the package and re-install manually:

    Now it is logging out successfully.

    rahmancam's fix worked for me. I had been updating word press via my wp admin dashboard and not via the Fatcow dashboard. One thing I did notice after updating this way was that ALL of my plug-ins were disabled afterward.

    Thanks for finding and posting this!!!

    re-installing per rahmancam's directions did not work for me.

    Just as a test, I updated my WordPress install from 3.0.3 to 3.0.4 via my WordPress dashboard. It updated successfully with no problems...however, the "connection reset" issue came back. I checked the installation version that FatCow shows and it still showed 3.0.3. I chatted with a tech support person with FatCow and they do not yet support 3.0.4 and advised that I contact WordPress regarding the issue.
