Installed the plugin on WP multisite installation - tried submitting the sitemap for the head site at Google Webmaster and received the following error -

    "Sitemap is HTML
Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead."

Saw someone else with this error but they never indicated how they fixed it. Site is http://www.costaricacloseup.com

    Your help would be appreciated!

    Thanks, Teee

  2. Google expects to see the sitemap at

    http://www.costaricacloseup.com/sitemap.xml

...but that URL redirects to your homepage, which is indeed HTML.

Check your .htacess file or any redirection plug-ins to see what's going on.

Yes I saw that and I have traced it to a 404 issue where if there was no sitemap in the directory there will be an automatic redirection to the homepage which was the case when the plugin requested I delete all prior sitemaps ... so I reinstalled the plugin and there is now a sitemap at http://www.costaricacloseup.com/sitemap.xml BUT i get the same error of -

    Sitemap is HTML
Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.

    Thanks, Tee

Found out how to make it work ... for all maybe it will be helpful -

Recent WordPress Multisite installation forced the domain to costaricacloseup (without the www.) on the basis of a multi-directory structure. Webmaster was originally set up under http://www., so when it looked for the sitemap at www. there was a 404 redirect to the index page. The solution was to use the root account at Webmaster where it find the sitemap no problem.

    Thanks for your help, Tee

  5. Glad you found a fix - thanks for reporting back.

... Except here's some strange behavior, an hour later there's redirect again of both http:/www. and http://. - I am using W3 Total Cache plugin, and when I clear the cache the sitemap is once again accessible. Appears to be a conflict with the latter plugin - any suggestions?

Sorry to bug you again - Tee
