• I tried to resolve this with wordpress.com and they said to come to wordpress.org.
I am trying to move my blog to wordpress.com to wordpress installed through Go Daddy. I have followed the prompts to export , download .xml file and then import the file and still no go. Here is the message I get on the new wordpress.
“Internal Server Error. The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.”
p.s on another matter, How do I get rid of this eeky looking avatar that is was created with my username. Should I not get a choice of whether to use one or not use one.

  • Well, the error isn’t quite descriptive. Is it on front end? Or in admin area?

Avatar: Go to Gravatar.com and register with the email ID you have registered with here. Add an image and your avatar will show up on everything WordPress when you use that email ID.

Not sure… that is what pops up when I complete the import prompt. I am not a techie person so have no clue really.

Well, there’s a workaround I can think of. First, we need to verify that the file is fine.

Try importing file to another blog. And then import your database to GoDaddy blog. That may work. If you send me the import file, I can send you database (.sql) file to import or do it for you(will need your account info in that case).

Let me know what you think.

Thanks for helping. Can you please explain using step by step instructions that a non techie would understand.

Okay, went to avatar and changed my pic, which appears on my profile. It is interesting that it prompted me back to wordpress.com.
Wordpress.com had told me that could not help me with the issue of transfering my wordpress.com blog to new wordpress which now is with wordpress.org. This is very confusing!

anyways…….still waiting on some step by step instructions on how to move the blog over. Cheers!

You should have an export file. Set up another blog on GoDaddy or locally and then import there. If it succeeds, you will have to export database and save to your HD.

    1. Log into your hosting control panel
    2. Open phpmyAdmin for your site
    3. Near top, click “import” and then upload the .sql file

This will erase all your settings but will get content.

    esmi,

I wasn’t trying to get contact details or anything to spam/con, was just trying to help. Being honest, I was unaware of rule and have removed the part that asked for info.

    Apologies, won’t happen again.

Understood. Sorry that it sounds so harsh but we have had problems with commercial providers posting here using bait & switch.

gr8tfoodblog, I’m assuming you’re using Windows here. Here’s what you need to do:

    • Go to http://www.easyphp.org/
    • Download “EasyPHP DevServer 13.1” (the orange button)
    • Install it on your machine.
    • Then go here: http://www.easyphp.org/modules.php and download WordPress module.
    • Install WordPress module as well
    • Run EasyPHP if it is not running, go to 127.0.0.1/home in your browser. Look for WordPress under “Modules”, then hover mouse over “?” next to it. It will show your admin username and password.
    • Click “Open” button on the right of “?” and WP login will open. Login using info from last step
    • Import your file from WP.com. If it works, the problem is with GoDaddy.

Proceed through these steps and let me know what happens. If problem is with GoDaddy, we will have to import database and I will give you detailed instructions for that too.

Esmi, No problems. I understand the issues and hate those type of marketers myself! 🙂

Will take care in future. Going to read the rules now!

How large is the export file?

Esmi, thanks for clearing the air on the sending over my info. I was a bit buffled so decided to wait a little. not sure how large export file is but this is what has happened so far:

I was just about to follow prompts offered by ishan001 when I discovered that 18/67 posts had transferred over, theme had disappeared and none of the posts from 2011,2012,2013 had transferred. My links on side bar all gone, categories missing, badges gone. Is this typical of export and import as noted in my first post?

    Questions:
If I try to export and import the file again will the information duplicate?

What really is the simplest way to get ALL the information transferred.

I also discovered that the dashboard on wordpress.org is the same as dashboard on wordpress.com. Shouldn’t integration be easier?
    Cheers!

It should skip already imported information but just in case you may want to create a backup of the installation you are importing to.

Even if you don’t need it you’ll still have a good backup and that’s not a bad thing.

    Jan,

Thanks so much for the tip. I went back and followed previous prompts to export from wordpress.com and import to my new wordpress and it worked. No duplicates.
After the process was done, I saw a listing of all the files that already existed on the page that followed.
Next, I went to all posts and found out that all my posts and images had imported.Yay!

Thanks for second tip: Back up files. I have done that now and hopefully will not have any other problems.

Thanks to all who helped. You were very patient and I really really appreciate your wisdom and great ideas.

Do have a great day and happy wordpressing.
