I am having the same issue on my own sites. The petfinder API appears to be down. When I go directly to the api call, I’m getting an internal server error at http://api.petfinder.com/. Hopefully Petfinder will get this fixed up soon. I’ll look into submitting the issue to Petfinder.

Thank you for looking into it! I see that Petfinder’s API seems to be intermittently down now… :-/

Petfinder has really gone to the dogs lately… 😉

Hi, yes — same issue here! Yikes, gave me quite a start. Thanks for whatever can be done.

Curious to know — what do other sites do in these circumstances? I am tempted to remove shortcode from my listing pages and instead send users directly to my shelter’s listings on Petfinder — is that what you do?

    Thanks!

RGardella, may I ask how you attempted to remove the shortcode from your listing page and send users directly to your shelters listing?

Hi, Snooty — I literally just edit the shortcode out of the content space for the page where my listings appear and leave nothing in that space; then I enter the URL of our shelter’s results search string into a plug-in I have called Page Links To. This just makes it so that the page (which used to be our pet listings page) now dumps the user at our Petfinder page instead.

Crude, I know, but I hate the thought of our users looking for our pets and getting that ugly error code instead! At least this gives them something.

When the Petfinder API is fixed I’ll put my shortcode back in and we’ll (hopefully) be all set again. . .I hope they fix it soon!

Same problem here. This thread gives a useful description of how to suppress the error messages:

The pets are showing up again. Petfinder must have fixed their API.

    Yeah, thanks!!

Is there a way to add to the plugin code where when there is an error, it does not show the xml error code but displays something like the following:
Sorry! We are having trouble retrieving our list of available dogs.
It seems Petfinder is down for the moment.
Please check back shortly, or view our dogs on Petfinder.
And the Petfinder be a link to where they can go to Petfinder to see your list of dogs? I know it can be added manually and when it is backup, just change it back, but was looking for the plugin to do it for me???
The reason I am asking, I really like the plugin, and I have a friend that codes and is using Petfinders API to pull a list of their dogs, but he has his set that when there is an error with the API, it just posts a message and no xml code?

@snootygiggles the link I posted above shows how to suppress the XML errors.
