[resolved] Error establishing a database connection - not a new install (18 posts)

I have seen this topic in many places, but most of them are for new installs. This error seems to have popped up in the last couple hours, and I'm too new to mySQL and cPanel to know what's going on.

    I get the error below:

    Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.
    * Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    * Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    * Are you sure that the database server is running?

What is very strange is that it bypasses the log-in page and goes straight to the error. I'm guessing the DB server is down, but cPanel says it's up. mySQL seems to read ok as well.

Not only is the log-in and admin page down, but the entire site is down. If I go to the site (http://systematicHR.com) I get the same error. Therefore it's not just an admin thing.

How do I figure out what's going on? I'm just waiting a few hours and hoping the DB server comes back up. If not, I'll be mystified why it worked one day, and not the next. Have made no changes to config other than CSS files and a plug-in that allows me to easily footnote and reference my posts.

    Thanks!!!

Email your host and ask what's up - it's their failure here.
Once it's all backup though if you aren't already taking backups, I would :)

So, my hosting service says the DB server is running and I need to check my DB setting and config settings. Can anyone tell me what these are? Should I just upload a new wp-config file?

    Thanks!!

No, I use webhostingbuzz.com. Happened around 17-19:00 GMT. I'm not going to subscribe to a bug theory at the moment though - my other 2 wordpress blogs are up and running.

Going to see if I can copy some folders over to a subdomain and get a new install of WP. If I can redirect the traffic, at least the site will be accessible.

How I fix the connection problem to the DB is still a mystery to me though. Help??

I am having the same difficulty. My webspace and hosting have not been messed with, and for some reason, it has recently started coming up with this message intermittantly.

This is causing me a great deal of concern, because I haven't the first clue how to fix this. My friend set this up for me,and I am merely a Write post, Publish sort of chap!

    Please help!

    Thanks

It sounds like your database server went offline for a minute.

I am also experiencing this same problem. This started yesterday and continues today. It does seem to come and go but the error message is there more than it is not. Seems strange that we all started having this problem around the same time. Are there any suggestions out there?

I've been messing with this since before lunch. I'm using DreamHost but they have been up all day because I've been all over their site. I can see my blog's last edited page online but when I go to click any link, it errors out with the 'no connection" msg.

I got screwed up when I was attempting to change my domain sub-dir that housed WP, now I can't get back in to WP. Can't I just upload a wp-config.php file that is setup (and I promise I'll start backups tonight)? TIA

Since I wanted to move from one sub-dir to another and my ftp client wouldn't let me do a "copy", I had to download my server version of my WP blog and upload it to the new sub-dir that I had "already" set the path to inside WP. At least I coulda swore 99% that I set the new path first but either my cache, my mind, or something got it all screwed up. When I started thinking aout it, all I needed to do was download and then upload to the new sub-dir (since my Filezilla wouldn't let me copy).

ot- the ftp thing got me thinking about hosting real quick, I'm a first time blogger, went with DreamHost based on this site and others but I tell you they SUCK for responding to HELP msgs, I'm still waiting from 3 days ago via their forum, I sent them an email and still haven't heard from them, my advice, try GoDaddy or something YMMV
