   I believe this is because I have a preview URL instead of a live address. The site is currently at http://www.motherandchild-edu.org and will be switching hosting. I uploaded all the files to go daddy and received this temporary URL: http://motherandchild-edu.org.previewdns.com/

   Looking at Moving WordPress, it says if I want to test before I switch, I need to temporarily change the siteurl and home in the database table "wp-options" through phpMyAdmin. I have no idea where this is or how to do it.

   @techjockey - you are totally off-topic, WPMU was not even mentioned by mcguirebearing. Besides, with the merge of WP and WPMU in 3.0, one wouldn't need to go through that process you went through anymore.

   @mcguirebearing - Make sure you have backup of your database and server files/folders esp. wp-content/uploads/ folder from your current install. You need backup of your theme and might as well have copies of your current plugins.

   Export your XML from old side as well via Tools > Export - All. That way, if you want a new clean installation, you can import the XML from the old site into your new site via Tools > Import - WordPress WXR.

   Sooner or later, you do you have to learn about phpMyAdmin so you could maintain and even troubleshoot database problems

   i changed the username and password... but I don't know what a database is... so I did not change that and so I have the

   "Error establishing a database connection"

   can someone help me
   aim name is "consumingworship" if you use aim

   a database is a place where the data of your blog (options, pages, articles, etc) are stored. It's different from your server. On most hosts it has to be created by a specific link (either "my databse" or something equivalent), and when setting it, you create a datababse, with a name, a user, with a login and its password (all three different from your ftp access).

   Administrating an own server without even knowing what databases are is not an easy job, and imho you should first learn, and then go to your own server... or find someone to administrate it, and ask him to set up the database and give you the information.
