I just wanted to upgrade my wordpress to the current 3.0.1. I did the manual install as directed but I think I obviously did something wrong. I now get the error when I go to login:
Error 500 - Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

and now when I even go to the site I receive the message:

    Error 403 - Forbidden

You tried to access a document for which you don't have privileges.

Please help! I want my website back! :(

  2. Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check your server error log for anything useful. If you don't have access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider to look for you.

I'm sorry James, I'm really green with this...
I use WordPress, 1and1 is where I bought the domain
and I use cyberduck to edit the FTP

please advise of where I would look for this error you speak of

    Thanks again

Also, everything in cyberduck seems to be fine, all is there as it was before the upgrade..

  5. Try manually resetting your plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This which will force the Default theme (WordPress 1.5 - 2.9.2) or the Twenty Ten theme (WordPress 3.0 and higher) to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue.

If neither of those work, you'll have to ask your hosting provider for the error log details regarding that 500 error.

    James!!
This definitely helped me get back into my wordpress dashboard! Thank you so much! But for some reason my website still isn't viewable.
    I am still getting the:
    Error 403 - Forbidden

You tried to access a document for which you don't have privileges.

I even went through the rest of the instructions you gave me above on your last post (besides contacting my host provider) and nothing has worked. Any suggestions? Please advise!

if you want, you can try and check the website out yourself

    thank you!

  7. Make sure that the permissions on all files are set to 644 and all directories are set to 755.

    the permissions are already set...
    still getting 403
    ? :(

  9. In that case, contact your hosting provider. A server-side security script could be interfering with WordPress.
