Since i am using (a child theme based on) twentyten for my site i am curious how long it will be supported with updates (i am currently using version 1.4).
And in general, is there an end-of-life date for the standard themes that come with the major WordPres releases (twentyten, eleven, twelve etc.)?
There's no end of use date for default themes that I'm aware of. It's only in that past 3 years that WPORG has been releasing a new default theme per year and I'm not sure if a firm policy has been set regarding to support for older default themes but I'll ask around for you.

Thanks esmi, i'll wait for your update.
I've not come up with anything definitive so far. Right now (and as I understand it), there are no plan to stop supporting Twenty Ten. It was (and still is) a very popular theme and I suspect that its ongoing popularity will be the driving force behind its support.

Hi esmi,
one of the reasons i wanted to know is that i read a lot about hacked WordPress sites. And that one of the main causes for that was that wp-core, plugins and also themes weren't updated regularly.
But if the support for Twenty Ten will not be stopped shortly, there is no reason to worry i guess
