Email Posting - Questions (6 posts)

    Hello there,

This is a post I sent to my blog this morning. I notice at certain times that when the posts appear they tend to either have a carriage return in them that was not deliberate or they have something added to them like below. Is this normal behavior or a setting that can be changed or maybe an additional plugin that can be added so this does not occur?

    final post after cron runs:

    Text Format – Test 1
    By Mobile Hobo

    Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

This is a test of the text formatting while sending an email to the
blog for posting. This test will on the hour be posted to the site. In
my past attempts to test this feature I have been having some sort of
formatting problem. It always seems to stick a carriage return some
place in the middle of the post. I don’t understand why this would
happen since when I type in the email I am just typing fluidly until I
get to the end of my post.

Hopefully today there will not be any
carriage returns in the middle of the post. However, even if there
isn’t it does not solve the problem. This could happen while the
mobile hobo is on the road and the post would not get fixed until he
was able to log in and edit the post from the admin console.

    Let’s see what happens.

    ________________________________________________

as you can see above there is a carriage return and this:

    Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Is there anything I can do about this? Once I am on the road and have no access to a PC I can't be fixing these posts. I really need them to be correct when I send them from email.

Any help or advice is welcome

    Kind regards,
    Saxamo

I can't fix your current problem, but I can offer a suggestion....especially since it looks like you are going to rely on email posting a fair bit.

I kinda got fed up with the email posting limitations (formatting, pictures, etc), and hunted around for various solutions. It took a few different things before I settled on something.

Have you heard of the posterous service? Check it out and see if maybe its a viable solution for you. Some folks don't like getting 3rd party solutions involved. But if you don't mind, you can set up with them, then you send an email to the email address they give you, and your posts automatically get posted wherever you want. (WordPress, twitter, facebook). I like it because I use a lot of music and pics, and posterous allows you to include whatever you want, and it will post those to wordpress too.

(I'm not associated with them in any way, justa service that I like)

I will definitely look into that. Seriously, anything to make it look right, easy and simple is the way to go. I do have a thought on the formatting issue along with the extra code.

I changed my email settings for that account to TEXT only from HTML. I just sent myself another test post and I am waiting ( could just manually run it ) for the CRON job to kick off at the top of the hour. Just making sure it is all running as well. I think this might alleviate the formatting issue ( hopes ) but creates the lack of luster.

I saw a plugin that enables you to send text emails with OPTIONS so to speak and create a nice post even though you are sending a text message. I will look into your suggestion first and then go the plugin route pending investigation. It did look ( the plugin ) a little complicated.

Thanks again.. Will post back after I get a result.

    Kind regards,
    Saxamo

Sure. Good luck to ya. As a point of interest, I wanted my email posts to have formatting options in my style.css that were different from my standard posts. So I emailed the posterous people to request that feature.

They were cool enough to do it for me, so now any post that posterous sends out to WordPress includes the class posterous_autopost

Just wanted to tell ya, I'm not sure if they mention it in their documentation. But now by adding .posterous_autopost to your css, you can affect the styling of just the email posts. Kind of cool. (I use it for photo resizing, etc)

Well, I checked out posterous and it looks like a pretty decent solution. I also got my second test back and of course it was perfect as just text.

I am going to play around a bit with posterous tomorrow so I can really look into it and make the commitment. Thanks again for your help and suggestions. Knowing about the autopost ( briefed that ) makes good sense. However, most of my photos require the use of highslide for each photo and two images for each post at different sizes, so unsure how that will work right now. Again, will delve in more tomorrow when I can really take my time.

    Thanks again!

    Kind regards,

    Hello there,

I have been playing with posterous all afternoon :D, lol.. It really is a nice service. However, I am unable to get the text that is aligned left in my email to wrap around the image as it does in the email and on Posterous in my WordPress Blog. The text always comes out UNDER the image.

Do you have any suggestions as far as formatting my thunderbird emails? How to make sure the text wraps around the image properly? Any and all help is appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    Saxamo
