Email notifications not using email address in general settings

If my website is at mysite.com and I set the email address in Settings > General to website@example.org, when notifications emails are send out, the sender address is instead wordpress@mysite.com instead of website@example.org.

Why does wordpress not use the email address I enter here, even though it says that if I enter an email address, that’s the one that would be used for notifications?
