I don't see any talk about email notification in the archives. so excuse me if this is a dead issue....
I'd like to be able to notify users of new content, with an opt-in checkbox in the profile.
Is this considered beyond the pale?
    Has anyone built one?
If I write a patch is it useful for inclusion in WP?

I was wondering the same thing, well about email notification. I have added a number of users to my blog and we use it like a forum for a creative writing goup that we have. How can I set it up so that we all get an email notification when a new post is made?

Which do people recommend? I've been trying Email Notification but it seems riddled with bugs. Most of my subscribers get raw html and I also get a bunch of strange errors on my settings page that I can't seem to get rid of.

I have wp-email notification v 2.1.1 running on a site and don't have problems notifying when a new post has been made.

Do you send the full text of your posts in HTML though?

No, just email notification that a new post has been posted.

My subscribe2 allows you to decide whether to send the full content of a post, just an excerpt (if one exists), or no post content at all, plus any amount of custom text you choose. You choose plaintext or HTML delivery. All recipients are BCCed to protect privacy; and if you're on Dreamhost you can enable "batch" mode to deliver multiple messages each with no more than 30 unique recipients (because Dreamhost caps the number of recipients in all outgoing messages).

Everything (except the Dreamhost toggle) is configurable through your WordPress administrative interface.

Thanks Skippy. Subscribe2 seems to be quite a bit more mature than Email Notification. Two questions, I can't seem to find where I can subscribe people manually.

And the subscribe form is in the correct place horizontally (i.e. in the main column) but vertically it starts below the lowest text in the sidebar, instead of at the top of the page. I'm using the default WordPress template (Kubrick), any ideas?

Christiaan: you can manually subscribe people by going to Manage -> Subscribers in your WP administration area.

    Sidebar problems, see here:

Damn, I tested it a bunch of times just with one of my email addresses on it, and then after importing the rest of the list and posting an entry in my blog it didn't send out a notification. I couldn't send an email message through the script either... :(

Are you on Dreamhost? If so, follow the directions in the documentation for dealing with Dreamhost.

Note that other hosting providers may limit the number of recipients permitted in any email message, also. Even if you're not on Dreamhost, it might be worth following the instructions for them, to see if that fixes your problem.

I spoke to my web host (Server Logistics) and they said they use sendmail and there's no limit.

It seems some did receive notification too (at least 1 did). My initial judgement was based on the fact that I didn't receive notification at the address I have subcribed to the list and neither did one other person who I asked. So it seems to have sent to some but not others. Any obvious reason for this type of thing?

Christiaan: are you 100% positive that the message didn't get flagged as spam by the receivers?

Yeah, because I had one of my email addresses down as a receiver and I definitely didn't receive it. I've just done another blog didn't receive it again, even though I got the admin copy sent to my other email address.

We know that my script is working, because at least one of the messages made it out.

If possible, I encourage you to contact your hosting provider, and ask them for the mail server logs relevant to this.

I'm trying to use the email notification but I don't know how to install it. Do I just open the WordPress file and download its contents into my plugins folder? OR do I add the whole folder?

  19. If you're trying to use Skippy's Subscribe2 plugin, the installation instructions are in the subscribe2.README file which is included in the download.

...I had some trouble downloading Skippys.

  21. I just downloaded Skippy's with no problems.

When I try to add subscribers I get:

Fatal error: Cannot instantiate non-existent class: cachedfilereader in /var/www/writing/wp-includes/wp-l10n.php on line 72

Hmm, managed to get my host to take a look at the server logs and they say everything's okay, emails were being sent through. I published another entry and same thing, got it sent to my admin address but not the other address I have subscribed for testing purposes (haven't asked others if they received it yet, but will). :(

slvhobbs: the cachedfilereader error you receive is due to the subscribe2.po and subscribe2.mo files in /wp-includes/plugins/. Delete them, and the plugin should work as expected. This should have been corrected in the latest release.

Christiaan: I suspect that something, somewhere, is filtering the messages. Feel free to subscribe my email address (skippy@skippy.net) and post a new item at your convenience. If I get the message, I'll reply to it.

Thanks a million! Now... how do I ass subscribers? In the README file it just say to add them as I see fit. But I don't know where to add them.
