Since the release of 3.0 and through what was probably a fluck, we've been setting up users on a multisite using their email address as their username. We were able to do this from the network admin. With 3.2 we are no longer able to do this. Get the error.
Only lowercase letters (a-z) and numbers are allowed.

Is there a way around this now?

i.e. allow the use of an email address as a username?

  2. I think you mean 'fluke' and not 'fluck' ;) VERY different things.

Yes, that is expected behavior. You should NEVER have been able to use emails as user names. It's not supported in MultiSite as it can cause issues when creating new sub-blogs.

    yes of course, fluke rofl

I figured it was not allowed but it didn't seem to cause any problems for us with our sub-sites. Just added them at the network level and then add existing user at sublevel.

I wonder what the reasoning is behind not allowing emails as username. It's so common on the internet that it would be nice to have in WP.

  4. Because the username is the default new blog name. Instead of trying to parse weird usernames, it was decided it was better to just only allow usernames that could be used as blognames.

Remember, since the blog can be a subDOMAIN as well as a subfolder, there are a lot more restrictions on it. And oddly that should NEVER have worked since 3.0

  5. It didn't work from the signup page - only the admin area was letting it through. mistakenly. ;) I think plugins like LDAP will let you use emails as usernames.

It's working again! Yeah! Yes, only from Admin page, which is fine for application. We register all our users on this particular site.
