    I want to make some changes to files but my editor is greyed out: can't edit, can't select, can't do anything with it - how do I ungrey it make the files editable

    Wrong logon maybe? Are you the owner of the files (i.e. did you write them with the same login)?
    Or, are you logged in as ADMIN?

    Easy way is to edit them offline and then upload them via FTP to your theme folder again.

    And you can edit your theme files probably because of permissions:

    Ok, are we talking about templates or posts/pages?

    good question, indeed... :)
    But I would bet he's talking about theme "files"..
