   Im new to WP....are there any themes that you can edit freely? The ones I have tried to just tinker around with have their permissions locked.. Thanks

   Have you checked that the themes' directories are all writeable?

   No - that's NOT what he said. ALL themes are editable. He's asking if you have used chmod to set your file permissions to ALLOW editing. IOW - you have to manually set file permissions for all your WP files to allow editing.
