• When attempting to use the Editor, by saving or clicking on a template file, I get the “Whoops, no page here” page. Even the URL shows /wp-admin/theme-editor.php. I can’t seem to access any of the template files from the Dashboard > Appearance > Edit Themes.

What I’ve already tried to solve the issue:

I’ve already tried de-activating plugins – no success.
I’ve already tried adding the “Use Google Libraries” plugin as suggested for an older issue similar to the one I’m experiencing.
I’ve tried accessing the admin by using a different browser.
There are currently no caching plugins to refresh.

And yes I’ve searched through some of the previous threads, however, the search funtion seemed to rank searches by terminology and not by date, thus, read through many old issues to no avail.

    Timeline.

Last time I accessed the Editor, it worked. However it’s been about 2 or 3 weeks since I’ve worked on the wordpress site so there’s no obvious moment of the addition of a plugin or some recent update. Also I’ve noticed all my other WordPress sites have the same Editor-not-working issue.

    Any solutions?

  • Hey there.

This is likely an issue with your theme. To verify this, please try reverting back to one of the default themes: twentyeleven, twentytwelve etc. You’ll be able to confirm that your theme is the problem if you’re able to able to access the editor after reverting.

Did you make changes directly to your theme last time you were in the editor?

If you downloaded your theme from the WordPress.org repository, you can post back to these forums to get help from the theme’s author. All of the theme’s listed in the repository have their own dedicated Support forums, which can be found on their individual pages here:
    http://wordpress.org/themes/

If you got your theme from another source, please try contacting your theme’s author directly via their official Support channels. They’ll be in the best place to provide Support on this.

    Hi Siobhan,

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried switching themes (to regular 2012) but the editor still doesn’t work. Clicking save or any of the template links will again send the WordPress site to the error page. Also I have 3 WordPress sites I’m currently managing. None of them have operational Dashboard Editors currently. All three are different themes. Two themes I built by editing the 2012/2013 and the other is from the wp themes. It appears that the themes are not the problem. WordPress is up to date for all three different websites.

For two of the themes, I am the theme builder, so unfortunately contacting myself won’t help. ; )

Now that I think about it, the Editor in all three themes hasn’t worked since the upgrade where the WP Dashboard got the new look with the black sidebar (not sure of the update version number.)

Did routing in the backend of the newest wp change for the editor?

This issue hasn’t been solved yet.

Clicking on any of the template links or the save button will cause WordPress to go the error page.

Can anyone offer any other potential solutions?

Now that I think about it, the Editor in all three themes hasn’t worked since the upgrade where the WP Dashboard got the new look with the black sidebar (not sure of the update version number.)

I’ve not been able to find any other reports of this error for 3.8 (the latest WP version.)

This might be a permission issue: To edit a file using the built-in WordPress Plugin or Theme Editors, the permissions for that file should be set to 666.

You can change the permissions on files by using an FTP client program, web-based file manager provided by your host, or from the command-line using SSH (secure shell). Your options depend on the type of access your host offers.

    Thanks.

I’ve checked the permissions and I’m not seeing any 666.

I am seeing 755 and 644, which seems to correspond with the suggested standards in the change the permissions link you gave me. Also I am seeing permission for myself as the owner to read and write. So unless I’m missing something, it looks like the permissions are appropriate.

Are you asking me to adjust the permissions to 666 temporarily or ongoing?

    I am seeing 755 and 644

Ah, I think we’ve found the problem here.

From the change the permissions link I gave, you can find the following paragraph:

If you want to use the built-in theme editor, all files need to be group writable. Try using it before modifying file permissions, it should work. (This may be true if different users uploaded the WordPress package and the Plugin or Theme. This wouldn’t be a problem for Plugin and Themes installed via the admin. When uploading files with different ftp users group writable is needed. On shared hosting, make sure the group is exclusive to users you trust… the apache user shouldn’t be in the group and shouldn’t own files.)

From the permission list, I can see that the 755 and 644 permissions don’t only allow group write access.

Are you asking me to adjust the permissions to 666 temporarily or ongoing?

These permissions would need to be adjusted for you to edit the files ongoing.

    Hope this helps you out.
