• Hello,

    I am trying to edit the navigation to my custom design i made in photoshop, after looking for some tutorials on how to edit the navigation i came across this code to work with.

    <?php wp_nav_menu( array( ‘container_class’ => ‘menu-header’, ‘theme_location’ => ‘primary’ ) ); ?>

    With this code i use the following css to edit my header

    .menu {width:890px; height:32px; position:relative; z-index:100;font-family:arial, sans-serif; }
    /* hack to correct IE5.5 faulty box model */
    * html .menu {width:800px; w\idth:745px;}
    /* remove all the bullets, borders and padding from the default list styling */
    .menu ul {padding:0;margin:0;list-style-type:none;}
    .menu ul ul {width:129px;}
    /* float the list to make it horizontal and a relative positon so that you can control the dropdown menu positon */
    .menu li {float:left;position:relative;}

    .menu ul li a{padding-left:3px; padding-right:3px;width:80px; background:red; }
    .menu ul li:nth-child(1) { width:80px; height:60px; background:red;}
    .menu ul li:nth-child(2) { width:100px; height:60px; background:red;}
    .menu ul li:nth-child(3) { width:120px; height:60px; background:red;}
    .menu ul li:nth-child(4) { width:80px; height:60px; background:red;}
    .menu ul li:nth-child(5) { width:100px; height:60px; background:red;}
    .menu ul li:nth-child(6) { width:80px; height:60px; background:red;}
    .menu ul li:nth-child(7) { width:80px; height:60px; background:red;}

    /* style the links for the top level */
    .menu a, .menu a:visited {display:block;font-size:14px;text-decoration:none: ;text-weight:strong;color:black; width:110px; height:30px; padding-left:10px;line-height:29px; font-weight:bold; }
    /* a hack so that IE5.5 faulty box model is corrected */
    * html .menu a, * html .menu a:visited {width:149px; w\idth:138px;}

    /* style the second level background */

    /* style the third level hover */
    .menu ul ul ul a:hover {background:#b2ab9b;}

    /* hide the sub levels and give them a positon absolute so that they take up no room */
    .menu ul ul {visibility:hidden;position:absolute;height:0;top:31px;left:0; width:149px;border-top:1px solid #000;}
    /* another hack for IE5.5 */

    /* style the table so that it takes no ppart in the layout - required for IE to work */
    .menu table {position:absolute; top:0; left:0; border-collapse:collapse;;}

    /* style the second level links */
    .menu ul ul a, .menu ul ul a:visited {background:#d4d8bd; color:#000; height:auto; line-height:1em; padding:5px 10px; width:128px;border-width:0 1px 1px 1px;}
    /* yet another hack for IE5.5 */
    * html .menu ul ul a, * html .menu ul ul a:visited {width:150px;w\idth:128px;}

    /* style the top level hover */

    .menu a:hover:nth-child(1), .menu ul ul a:hover:nth-child(1) { width:80px; height:60px; background:green;}
    .menu :hover:nth-child(1) > a, .menu ul ul :hover:nth-child(1) { width:80px; height:60px; background:green;}

    .menu a:hover:nth-child(2), .menu ul ul a:hover:nth-child(2) { width:100px; height:60px; background:blue;}
    .menu :hover:nth-child(2) > a, .menu ul ul :hover:nth-child(2) { width:100px; height:60px; background:blue;}

    .menu a:hover:nth-child(3), .menu ul ul a:hover:nth-child(3) { width:120px; height:60px; background:red}
    .menu :hover:nth-child(3) > a, .menu ul ul :hover:nth-child(3) { width:120px;height:60px; background:red;}

    .menu a:hover:nth-child(4), .menu ul ul a:hover:nth-child(4) { width:80px; height:60px; background:yellow;}
    .menu :hover:nth-child(4) > a, .menu ul ul :hover:nth-child(4) { width:80px; height:60px; background:yellow;}

    .menu a:hover:nth-child(5), .menu ul ul a:hover:nth-child(5) { width:100px; height:60px; background:yellow;}
    .menu :hover:nth-child(5) > a, .menu ul ul :hover:nth-child(5) { width:100px; height:60px;background:yellow;}

    .menu a:hover:nth-child(6), .menu ul ul a:hover:nth-child(6) { width:80px; height:60px; background:green;}
    .menu :hover:nth-child(6) > a, .menu ul ul :hover:nth-child(6) { width:80px; height:60px; background:green;}

    .menu a:hover:nth-child(7), .menu ul ul a:hover:nth-child(7) { width:80px; height:60px; background:green;}
    .menu :hover:nth-child(7) > a, .menu ul ul :hover:nth-child(7) { width:80px; height:60px; background:green;}

    /* make the second level visible when hover on first level list OR link */
    .menu ul li:hover ul,
    .menu ul a:hover ul{visibility:visible; }
    /* keep the third level hidden when you hover on first level list OR link */
    .menu ul :hover ul ul{visibility:hidden;}
    /* make the third level visible when you hover over second level list OR link */
    .menu ul :hover ul :hover ul{ visibility:visible;}

    At the moment i am experimenting with the css to got what i want but i just can not figure out how to get the following menu.

    (see picture) http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/9869/testnavin.png
    I want to have a menu item with a icon above it , when u hover the icon and the categorie should change color.
    Also a submenu should pop out ( if the categorie got one).

    My question to u guys is if somebody know how to style the css to get this effect and maybe someone can give me a tutorial becouse i can’t find one.

    Cheers and thanks in advance

  • Give the menu links background via CSS. You can target different categories in the CSS, use your browser to look at your menu. You should then be able to see the category classes being added to your menu.

    You can then target these in your CSS, giving them a background (the icons). To make the icon appear above the text, give the links top padding.

    To change the backgrounds/colours on hover, use the CSS “:hover” selector.

    Hey bright thanks for the reply i used top-padding but now i also got padding on the submenu.

    Lol. Then add “padding-top:0;” to the sub menu link classes in your CSS.
