ive decided to change the template i use for my website but first the new template requires editing and a bit of re-designing.

where do i upload this new template so that i can redesign and preview it whilst my homepage is still live with the old template ?

    thanks !

    You can either:

    1. Edit the theme on a separate installation of WP, say, domain.com/testinstall, or,
    2. You can edit the theme files while it's on your main site, just don't activate it until you're done. You can use the "preview" function to see how you're doing.

to edit a theme on a separate installation do i simply transfer that theme onto the /testinstall folder via the FTP ?

and will this allow me to preview it at domain.com/testinstall ?

tried it so far and it didnt seem to work. am i doing something wrong!?

Add it to /testinstall/wp-content/themes. Otherwise, that's correct.

Well, I use a combination of a text editor and an ftp client to edit my themes, but you can also use the built-in editor at Appearance > Editor. Any changes you make will show on your /testinstall site like you said.

So I've transfer the theme to my /testinstall folder then when I go to the domain.com/testinstall url I get the following message :

    403 permission denied

You have been denied permission to enter this directory or run this script / file.
    This may be due to:

    * The Script or File has incorrect permissions.
    * The contents of this folder are private.
    * The Script or File is set to deny your access.

Is there anything else I need to transfer to the testinstall folder apart from the template folder itself ?!

Check your permissions in your FTP editor. Your testinstall folder should be set to 755. Just to clarify, your template is in /testinstall/wp-content/themes, correct?
