In one of my WP accounts the editing post icons are missing. I use Firefox - I've reinstalled WP 3 times with automatic update and deactivated then reactivated all TinyMCE plugins. Nothing works.
I'm not WP or C-panel savvy so if you help me, please dumb it way down for me. :)

That is the mceToolbar which is generated by mcetinymice.
Have you diabled all plugins and switched to the twentyten theme to see if the toolbar appears?
There are some possible solutions for a broken Visual Editor with 3.1 here.

Thank you kmessinger, but it's not the TinyMCE toolbar only. The few editing icons that came with WP are missing too.
No I have not disabled all plugins and switched to the twentyten theme. Will I lose all the work I've done in Thesis if I do this?
btw, everything works in IE.

Disabling plugins and switching to the twentyten theme is basic debuging to figure out a problem. No, you won't lose work because all your work is in the data base. BTW, the whole editor and icons are from TinyMCE, AFAIK.
Some replies seem to be missing here so I am not sure where we are.
You said in a missing reply that it works ok in IE so perhaps it is a javascript problem in FF? Do you have the latest version of FF? Also you can test your java here http://javatester.org/version.html

In your wp-config.php file.
If everything is fine in IE then you might want to look at upgrading Firefox to version 4 as it suggests in the troubleshooting list, assuming you're running version 3 now.
You should also try deactivating all plug-ins to see if there is a conflict. You shouldn't lose any changes anywhere if you do this. If turning off all your plug-ins solves the issue, then reactivate them one by one to find the culprit.
BTW - if you're using Thesis you might also want to ask for support over there as well, since that is a premium theme - they may have other suggestions.

Thanks zoonini. I'm using the latest version of FF. I think I'll reinstall it first before trying the other advice you and kmessinger have been kind enough to give me.
I'll let you know if all your tips do the trick for me.

Yay! Thank you both! Deactivated almost all of my plugins and reactivated only the ones I've been using for ages. I'll worry about the more recent ones later.

Great! Did you figure out which plug-in was causing the problem? It may help others in the future if you name it here.

I haven't figured out which plugin it is yet. I'll play with it later today and post it here. Once I do, I'll mark this as resolved.

I had the same problem. Turned out it was "Scissors for v2.9"
