Easy FancyBox in Absolum theme

Does anyone know if I should be able to use the Easy FancyBox plugin in the Absolum theme? It’s been driving me mad.
The FancyBox options have come up in my settings, but it doesn’t seem to have any impact when I try to upload pdfs – the link on the page opens to the pdf file in another page.
(I’ve set the options to deal with pdfs. But when I look at the code in Editor, I can’t find any reference to FancyBox or Javascript.)
I’m very much a beginner user, and feel a bit flummoxed by the whole thing.
I’m a magazine journalist and trying to create a portfolio, but most portfolio plug-ins and themes seem to be geared towards photography.
Any helpful steer would be very much appreciated!
