Easiest way to insert text and image on page? (12 posts)

    I am very new to WordPress (working on a site for college) so code speak to me is pretty much gonna go over my head.

    I am trying to add, for example on one page,

    A header/title thats a jpg banner

    Beneath that text aligned on the left, an image right aligned.
    Beneath that, same again, left text, right image.

    I tried to do this earlier by typing the text and then inserting the images. This worked until I hit the Update button, then it moved everything. I tried this about 5 times with the same results.

    I then typed everything into Word and tried to paste the whole document through the 'kitchen sink' option. The only thing this did was insert the outline of the pictures (as in it was the correct image size, but the actual image was an empty shell).

    Is there something obvious im doing wrong?
    Or is there a way I can do it thats easier than what im doing?

    You can't paste from Word - Word does not use compatible formatting for websites.

    General info on images:

    Also, to do that with images/text, you need to insert the image first and set the alignment on the image to right. The add the text after the image.

    So the image goes in first, then when you move it to right align you will be able to type text on the left of it?

    I obviously have my Word brain on too much cause thats backwards to what im used to. Thanks!

    The website is a complete mess at the moment, but its acecoenergy.co.uk.

    Whilst im at it, do you know how to hide the same detail being repeated twice?
    It says home in the tab, and then under it it says home again in black, I dont want it to show up underneath just in the tabs.

    Thanks for the quick response.

    Once I right align the picture, it lets me add text left align but it only adds the text above the image, not next to it. I know its just me doing something wrong, I just dunno what it is!

    Yep, HTML/CSS is a different thing than print layout (or Word) :). Before you get too far on this, if you are going to make changes to theme files, you'll want to make a Child Theme- so that your changes are not lost when the theme is updated. See this page on child theme for this theme - http://wordpress.danielatwork.com/pilotfish/faq/ Also: http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

    If you are only going to make CSS changes, you can use a custom CSS plugin such as Custom CSS Manager.

    Either way, you can then hide the page titles by adding this CSS:

    header h1 {
       display: none;
    }

    Which page are you putting images/text on so I can look at it?

    Im guessing CSS changes is all ill be doing... there's no way I can be in depth with this, ill mess up sooner rather than later knowing my luck!

    The page im trying to put in is a sub page under Boilers called Free Boiler - Are you eligible?
    Its not just going to be that page that has both text and images, but this is a good starting point.

    I don't see any images on that page right now? (But lots of empty paragraph tags).

    I'd suggest taking out everything you have (copy the text to a plain text editor if you want to save it) - then first put in the image and choose align right in the image screen. Then put in the text you want - it will automatically "wrap" around on the left side of the image - don't set any alignment on the text - it should be automatically where you want it.

    See how that works.

    Sorry I forgot to mention I took it out of the page when it wasnt working.
    I thought I had to align the text, didnt realise it automatically did the text wrap.

    Ill try your suggestion tomorrow and get back to you on the result.

    Seeing as im pretty much at the start anyway, I think ill just restore default of the pilot fish theme and start from scratch and follow the FAQ link you posted up there.

    Seems like the best way to 'clean' it and put the child theme, etc, in.

    With regards to the CSS you posted above, is there a particular place within the header file that I put that or does it not matter as long as its in there somewhere?

    CSS doesn't go in the header file - it goes in an external style.css file (via child theme) or in a custom CSS section (if you use a Custom CSS plugin).

    Yeah, a child theme would be a good way to go - you won't lose anything that way. But you don't really need to start from scratch - your content will transfer to any new theme.
