   I have to build my first e-commerce site.

   The shop has about 500 products (with different sizes & prices of each item). I will need to calculate shipping/taxes and accept credit cards, and would like to be able to make the site attractive, functional and not look cheap.

   My background is html/css, and some php/mysql, and am just getting somewhat comfortable with WordPress. As this is my first e-commerce site, I am a bit unsure which way to proceed.

   Would you WP whizzes recommend I attempt it using WordPress, or lean towards Joomla Drupal, etc.

   My other choice is to do it with html & Zencart or something (more my comfort zone).

   You can accomplish the things on that list through the use of ecommerce plugins in WP.

   Depending on how technical you are, Drupal and Joomla are good choices as well, just a bit more complex than WP.

   Thanks gabe, I had just heard about possible security issues with e-commerce sites using WP, or would you think that is not really an issue?

   I have lightly played with WordPress and Joomla. If you were to build one yourself, which one would you personally choose. And thanks.

   I can't speak to the security issues. Perhaps someone else can chime in on that.

   As for WP vs Joomla, based on my level of experience (and I consider myself technically moderate) I prefer the former since I want to spend my time creating content, not wrestling with the backend. That said, my needs may be different from yours.

   If you do some searches on ecommerce plugins here and read their reviews, you should be able to get a good indication of whether or not they will support your specific needs.

   If WP is good enough for you, I think I will research their e-commerce plugins. I mean, there must be a ton of people who build e-commerce sites with WP. Thank you very much.

   What you want to do is get a very good list from your client of the features she/he needs for their site and then research the plugins available to ensure that the feature set can be met.

   In terms of security, if they're taking credit cards on their site you need to make sure that you have an SSL and that you're on PCI DSS compliant hosting.

   If your client is going to have 500 plus products, check out WooCommerce, WP E-commerce, Shopp and Cart66.
