dynamic search suggestions from categories/tags? (3 posts)

    Hello,

I would like to know if its possible to create an autocomplete for a search bar, that populates with tags and categories in a dropdown list.

Ideally the autocomplete would list up to 3 parent categories for example:
    >> Food >> Bread >> Tiptop
    >> Food >> Bread >> Wonder White

Also if I was just to type in 'bread' the search would need to then provide both the options above. Therefore if I was to type in 'food' then all my categories under food would appear in the list like so:
    >> Food >> Bread
    >> Food >> Cheese
    >> Food >> Pizza

If anyone has any knowledge or can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Steve

Yes, it's possible. It's typically an AJAX implementation. There's plenty of code examples you can download and use. Start by searching for ajax autosuggest. It's even possible to define a static javascript or jQuery application that works off of the keydown event. It will take some work to develop your own implementation. You're better off finding existing code that's close to what you want, then tweaking it to get it just right.

    Thanks for the reply.

I have found the Autocompleter plugin to try:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/autocompleter/

Also I am working with this page:

Just in case someone else needs some direction.
